Tyre testing?

YES! But it's a very specific tyre test.

I will have to think. The tyres look balloon like and either slicks or bald.

They are indeed treadless. For a reason.

To increase or decrease adhesion?

To decrease it, I suppose. It would be to lessen rolling resistance.

Sorry Richard, nothing to do with fuel economy. Foxawy has reached the correct conclusion. This is a Dunlop engineer testing tyres for a speed record attempt.

I will now LOCK this for foxawy. Please answer the questions I asked for the point - there is something which is very important about these tyres and what they were going to be used for. I will lock it for 24 hours.

Ok here is what i found , so the car in the picture is a  Elfin ‘Mallala’ Ford used for surface testing !! these wheels were a smaller scale replica for a land speed record car .

Bluebird ?

Correct!. Thank you for trying so hard - most of my puzzles get ignored!

The man in the car is Ted Townsend, a Dunlop engineer, and he is using an Elfin Mallala single-seat race car which was fitted with 13-inch exact replicas of the wheels which they intended to use on Bluebird for the Land Speed Record attempt. This was at Lake Eyre in Australia, a dry salt lake just like Bonneville. The wheels used on Bluebird were much larger, but this test gave an indication of whether the design would be suitable for high speeds.

A well-deserved point.
