I thought we had seen this car before, but the search says not. What is it, built by whom, and pictured at what race?

No. It's front-engined.

A lot of digging but I eventually found the same picture: II Coupe des Petites Cylindrées 1948, Circuit de Reims-Gueux, Pierre Flahaut with a BMW 328 registered as a Frazer Nash, DNF

On another website I found the full entry list, with car #48 called "Martin Spéciale - BMW 328"... I should say that I read a number "46" on the car... but this should have been Raph's Simca-Gordini T11, so the number could be "48" indeed...

BTW... the Ferrari 166SC #26 in the background was an easy clue...  ;D

I now have a problem which is the result of me working in the evening, and not having internet access for several hours. All these answers remained unanswered!

I would have locked it for Iluvatar to name the builder, because he had got so far and I'm sure would have found that answer. Meanwhile, PJ gave me the last remaining answer, and was perfectly entitled to do so.

Although the car was driven by Pierre Flahaut, it was built by Eugene Martin. He campaigned the car in many post-war races, and I was surprised that it had not already been a puzzle.

The simplest thing is to award one point each.

PS The famous "Black Book" names this car as a BMW, so that's what I'm going to call it. I think they were commonly referred to as Frazer Nash by entrants in the early post-war years for political reasons.

I was not home when this was moved...I saw it from my mobile and post my answer without reading carefully the previous answers. No doubt Iluvatar would have completed it and next time I will take my time to read if the previous posts contains the 95% of the answer. I kindly ask to give him the point and take away mine...I know he didn't help me because I had the answer ready long ago, but I don't want other members think that this way of solving puzzles brings points.  ;)

The action of a true gentleman. I must admit that I myself have been guilty of gaining points in this manner, back in the days when I was points-chasing. I will do as you ask. Thank you.

Don't worry for later answers and points... since I became a pro the satisfaction of solving a puzzle through deep researches is really rare and by itself is worth the effort  :)
