This one has now out-stayed its time with the Experts, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to move it up to the Pro's for such an easy point..
Surely there's an Expert who has some idea what this is?

I know it says that on one website but it's not correct.
It needs a bit more research but since we're on the Pro's board here and it's obviously a TVR I won't lock it (yet!)

1956 TVR open sports car with Coventry Climax engine. It was imported in the USA by Ray Saidel who planned to sell it under the Jomar name.

I don't want to offend the OP with my lack of specific knowledge, since some of us know he's a TVR man at heart.

Is this by any chance the car which ended up as FHF705? It is fitted here with a Microplas body, but was rebodied with the first "notchback" style which preceded the Grantura.

Yes, that's what it is (though I'd have to check if that was its registration).
The car existed in this form for less than a year then was re-bodied as you describe to become the prototype Grantura coupé.

The information was obtained from a very well-known car-lovers'  site, and the TVR enthusiast who posted it showed a sequence of images which represented this particular car's history. I'm around 95% sure it's correct. Here's the car as it ended up.

For some reason, based on absolutely no information whatsoever, I had assumed yours was a Griffith or Chimera or similar. No idea why......

I remember from my teenage years of motor sport history a certain Tommy Entwhistle who used to pedal a Grantura very quickly indeed.

I prefer the old and unusual of course!  Mine celebrates its 50th anniversary this year..
Tommy Entwhistle's Gem registered TE 1 has featured here on AP.
