What's this and where was it built, for 1 point?:

Looks like a Ford-based job, probably a V8 of around 1935.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

It's a pre-war V8 but not a Ford; I don't know exactly when it was built in this form but the chassis is from earlier than 1935.

I assume it's based on a mass-produced pre-war American V8 car, and besides Ford there were few of them. So is it based on a 1932 Pontiac ?

Your assumption is right, but it's not based on a Pontiac nor is it from 1932.

I think this is the car advertised on Craigslist as a 1953 de Soto based on a 1929 chassis. Having said that, the engine is a flathead V8.

The car was based in Washington.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Carnut

Yes, apparently it was built by a guy in Salt Lake City in the 1950s around a 1929 Desoto coupé chassis using bits from various different cars, and you're right it does have a flathead V8 though it couldn't be said to be Ford-based..

It was amazingly easy to find - I simply Googled 1930 red hotrod and the Craigslist entry came up on the first page. This is what I was shown, I suspect "as found".

Yes - there are pics available on at least a dozen different websites, some of them very well-known and staple sources!
I'm amazed it reached the Pro's...

Plase ID the car for a point - name, donor and builder are required!

I can't find this anywhere, yet these types of photo are usually all over the net on photostream sites. It looks like a racer based on a stock chassis, around 1930-32, similar to the Indy "junk formula" cars.

What interests me is those rear tyres - is this a car which raced at Pikes Peak?

I don't think it raced at PIkes Peak. It is American and it appears on a few well-known sites :)

Ford V8 flathead engine?
