Looks like a Porsche inspired kit car, the doors are the least convincing part

Not French ergo not Renault or Alpine..

Looks like a Porsche inspired kit car, the doors are the least convincing part

..but you're on to something there.
It's not a kit-car though..

Actually is what it seems to be - a Porsche. It shows up in a slant-nose 914 search as a heavily modified '75 show car. Rear treatment creates a very unique effect.

That's right.
Have you found the actual car, because there's just one aspect of it that's missing from your reply that I'm really looking for to award the point?
Locked for you to dig!

I was trying not to be pedantic so I let that pass..
No, it's information about the bodywork.

Multiple for-sale listings when you start sniffing around but all contain the same text: One of one with custom bodywork, laid back windshield, fixed roof, Ferrari fly yellow paint, never any rust.

I'm guessing that doesn't scratch the itch . . .

Not quite but you've dropped your own hint..
How was the body built?

I don't mean what material was it built from..
How were the body parts formed?  Off the shelf?  Or...?

It's an extensive, one-off, hand-made, custom-build. Coachbuilt? You're being very patient but I feel like I'm still coming up short.

You used the word I'm looking for in your Reply#11!  That's what I meant when I said you'd dropped your own hint..
The body was *****-built?
I suppose it means the same thing as 'hand-made' but we might as well stick it out to the bitter end now..!

And the term isn't coachbuilt? Already established that this isn't out of a box (for the most part anyway . . .) so it seems the alternative is shades of grey to define a unique, custom creation. When this really matters is when the designer or builder helps identify a specific vehicle but that doesn't appear to be the case with this car. May need to break out my thesaurus!

Owner-built?

Does the word 'Owner' appear in your Reply#11? No!  But what does? In the second sentence?!

It's been stated and established that this was a CUSTOM BUILT CAR. However, this process has been reduced to semantics. Unlike the premise of the puzzle, there's no longer a point to it. For me, anyway.

Well, all right, but it's not unusual here on AP for a puzzler to hold out for something that might appear to be nit-picking as we do deal in specifics; I've been the victim of it many times myself when I thought I'd posted the fullest answer possible.

I don't know what other help I could give you, but the expression I was looking for was 'scratch-built'.  That implies quite a lot; the parts for it were built up from scratch by the builder, not using bits of fender etc from other cars like many custom jobs.  Your second sentence said "I'm guessing that doesn't scratch the itch . ." so the only word there that could possibly fit was "scratch".

But I'm not going to open it up for someone to steal a point they wouldn't really deserve so we'll call it solved.  I may not always be so generous though; it's up to the puzzler to determine what he wants and hold out for it if he wants!

My mistake; I thought this site was about identifying cars, not reading the mind of some pedantic editor. Totally subjective.

Don't bother showing me to the door -- I can find my own way.

That's a pity if you choose not to continue as it's good to have you on board and  you are obviously a knowledgeable enthusiast.
The site is about more than just identification though, as some puzzles are quite easy to identify; often other information is asked for like who built it or where it was built or what was it in a previous life.

It's all just a game and needs to be played in the spirit in which it's intended, and I'm sorry you feel so aggrieved but I did my best to point to the answer for you and ended up giving you it along with your point.  But if you don't enjoy that kind of game then perhaps AP is not for you.
