It was indeed 1988, but a similar - but not the same - device ran at Le Mans in '86 and 87. Built by Gerard Welter and Michel Meunier- both of whom worked for Peugeot - it was intended to be the fastest car at Le Mans, a feat it achieved clocking 253mph on the Mulsanne Straight in '88, driven by a very brave man called Roger Dorchy. Having achieved this speed the team packed up and went home with more than 12 hours of the race still to run.
