That would have been BMC at that date. I've thought of a couple of more marques, but neither seems likely.  This is a great puzzle!

One of my ideas was Armstrong-Siddeley. I've just found out that Michelotti built a one-off for a Spanish client based on an Armstrong-Siddeley 234. This would account for the LHD and the styling of A-S cars was a bit outdated at that time, so Michelotti would have relished giving it a modern look.

As they say in John Buchan novels - "Am I right,sir?"

Well, between you you've cracked it, and I suppose the 24hr lock was up anyway.

This is an Armstrong-Siddeley 234 by Michelotti. We have had at least one Michelotti styling sketch here before, which is quite different to the finished car. Until recently I wasn't aware that his ideas had come to fruition in any way.

I'll give a point to Allemano and a point to nicanary, although I think the lock etiquette is to wait until the OP unlocks the puzzle... but who cares, it's only a game, right?

Not one of Michelotti's best works in my opinon. Maybe that's why only a few ever did see it..

Well, I don't know what to say. I was at work tonight and about 2 hours after posting I realised what I had done.  I spent the rest of the evening in dread of what I would find when I returned to AP. I knew the puzzle was locked, and we were all having a bit of fun passing comments during the lock, but I cannot explain in any way why I posted the answer - like many members I had spent the time trying to solve it, but when I found the answer I must have been overcome with emotion or something. It was a basic error which would be acceptable for a Rookie, but inexcusable for someone of my experience.

I think you have reacted with commendable patience and courtesy. I can only take this opportunity to apologise to Barrett, Allemano and all members who took part in this thread. It was a really good puzzle, and I ruined it.

Please deduct my point - I'm sure it wouldn't have taken Allemano long to find the correct answer, it's all there on the Wiki entry for Michelotti. Whether or not 24 hours have elapsed, it's AP etiquette to wait for the lock to be withdrawn by the OP unless there are unusual circumstances. I think I've wrecked other puzzles in the past by my recklessness. I'm truly sorry.

Does anyone have any further photographs of this car? I know there are a few excellent marque history books on Armstrong-Siddeley, none of which are in my collection. perhaps a photo or two of it appears in one of them . . . I sure hope so.

Not really a thing to be ashamed of. It happened to all of us once or twice in our AP career, so bear up!

I did have a front view, but annoying I deleted the photograph by mistake. It does appear in one of the marque histories, the only place I've ever seen it.

Just thinking about this - did Armstrong-Siddeley produce LHD cars?

I can't believe that an Italian carrosserie would re-engineer a car for just one client, and I have a feeling that A-S only built cars in RHD form. Their target market wasn't really the overseas client, except perhaps for British consulates.

When that A-S Hurricane was new, Sweden drove on the left, but for some reason they mostly didn't use RHD cars.
Perhaps the car wasn't supplied new to Sweden.

You're right.  The only RHD Swedish-registered car I ever remember seeing there was a Rover 3-litre.
The buses were, however, RHD, probably as the driver would otherwise have been in the way of the entrance door!  They were even Leylands sometimes; those were the days!
