WFM407: Solved Burma Dodge
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:29:33 AM »
Time for another odd ball.

The maker is pretty obvious but this truck had a specific name, a specific destination and a specific specification difference from normal variants.  I need all three answers for the point.

The photo was taken in China around that time.  I did not write down the city.

Thank you for the puzzle.  Solving it added to my knowledge of 1940s military action in China.

I was going to ask "Obvious question, is it a Dodge?", but that led me to "China Dodge 4x2", which led to Burma Road Truck.

Not only just the military action in China, but a footnote to automotive history. China drove on the left (RHD) until the US occupation in 1945-1946, something I was not aware of even having been born there in 1940.

As China was very poor at the time, few vehicles were imported directly by Chinese customers and most of the vehicles to be seen in photos of the day were owned by foreigners, either businessmen, clergy or the various military forces who were advising the multitude of Chinese armies or were guarding the compounds of the infamous Concessions.  The foreigners also had to drive on the left up until ca. 1946 even if driving LHD vehicles.

A well earned point.
