No. A hint: this company was a subsidiary of a slightly better known one.

Based on your hint, is this an FL (subsidiary of Otto) from about 1912?

Ajax was the brand name of the manufacturer Briscoe Frères which was a branch of the U.S. company Briscoe Motor Corporation.  Therefore, might the puzzle car be an Ajax from about 1913/1914?

I've pretty much run out of ideas, but I will try a real long shot.  In many ways, but not all, this car reminds me of a Lion-Peugeot, which merged with Peugeot in 1910, but the Lion Peugeot brand continued to 1915.  I can't locate Lion-Peugeot as previously appearing on AutoPuzzle, which really surprises me, but perhaps it really isn't as well known as I think.  I'm not sure if Lion-Peugeot really qualifies as a subsidiary of the better known Peugeot company, but when one is getting desperate one throws a "Hail Mary".  Might the puzzle car be a Lion-Peugeot (V4C3?) from about 1912?

Regarding your hint: "This company was a subsidiary of a slightly better known one", was the parent company also French, or based in another country?

Might this be a Sinpar 8CV from about 1913?  I have a reference that says it ways identical to, and sold as, the Demeester 8CV.  I can find no photographs of either, nor any reference that says that Sinpar was a subsidiary of Demeester, but both existed at approximately the same time, both were located in the Paris suburb of Courbevoie, and, at least in my mind, Demeester is slightly better known than Sinpar.

No. The mother company supplied components as well as complete cars for different marques. Some books just list this car amongst these others, while others say that this offspring was not made for an external customer, but just a brand for the mother company's own retail.

Thanks Gerd!  As luck would have it, I was looking at a reference for Lacoste & Battmann when you posted your last hint.  I had looked at Simplicia previously, but discarded that marque because the reference said "front transverse leaf spring suspension".  However, Simplicia was the only Lacoste & Battmann marque that fit the other criteria, so I took a chance with it.

Do you know if the "front transverse leaf spring suspension" reference is in error, or applies to a different Simplicia model?

"front transverse leaf spring suspension

I have only one 1909 chassis photo which shows this rather weird technical detail you´ve mentioned.

So it must have been a feature that only was part of the earlier Simplicia cars.
