What might this be good for?

For one point, please respond and identify this car.

Is it a headlight in the folded-out-of-the-way position, to help a bit with streamlining?

Is it a car known to be the first one featuring hidden/pop up headlights?

Yes, it is the 1926 Peugeot for the Le Mans race. Its headlights could be moved into the engine bay in order to avoid damage at daytime, and to improve the aerodynamics a little bit.

This would appear to be one of the Peugeot 174S Le Mans cars (probably Boillot/Rigal as Wagner/d'Auvergne carried comp no. 3) and there is a sliding panel in the bonnet side which covers the lamp. In 1926 the surface of some of the roads was still a bit loose and another car retired "with a stone through crankcase" so protecting headlamps was well needed!

Edited to correct Type No.

Thanks, Allan, that is exactly the same car. One can see the sliding panel pushed back in the magazine article.
