Who is this? This is not how we regularly see this person photographed.

The only other woman driver I can think of who fits " This is not how we regularly see this person photographed." is Barbara Cartland who once took part in a "ladies only" race at Brooklands.

Not her/him. The reference from my puzzle concerns the date this photo was taken. By then the person concerned was no longer active in their field.

Not her. This person was famous at a much earlier date.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This is an apology to D-type and all AP members who have looked at this thread and attempted to solve it. I have just checked my source for this image in order to satisfy myself, and found it to be a falsehood. I cannot explain why I didn't do this before, but the image was incorrectly captioned on my source site.

It claims that the person photographed is Dorothy Levitt, famed early motorist and pilot, but she died in 1922, and the car in which she is sitting is clearly a Bugatti Type 35, which was introduced in 1924. I am withdrawing the puzzle, and apologise to all members, especially D-type, for misleading you.

I will retire in disgrace.........

(PS I think the driver is almost certainly Helle Nice, and will award D-type a point accordingly)

Thanks to excellent detective work by ropat53, we now have a definitive answer to this puzzle.  The puzzle photo was taken by George Hoyningen-Huene as a portrait of model Colette Salomon - the image dates from 1927, in which season it is claimed that Salomon raced a Bugatti T35.

So my incorrect claim about Dorothy Levitt, and my assumption about Helle Nice, are both now dead and buried! Thanks ropat.

(Your honesty deserves a point  in my opinion, and will be awarded.)

You're the Editor! I have no idea, and feel rather embarassed that I mad such a mess of this puzzle.

I awarded the point to D-type because I, too, thought it was Nice. I suggest he retains it.

Ropat53 sent me a PM about how he solved it - it wasn't the traditional method, but he was open and honest, and I felt deserved some recognition for his work.

If any of the editors are not happy about this conundrum, I'm more than willing to let them take the appropriate action.

And please feel free to subtract the point I was awarded. The way I solved this, as nicanary said:"wasn't the traditional method"

We must never lose track of the fact this is only a game!
I'm  happy for D-type to retain his point as a matter of goodwill as I would hate to spoil his euphoria at becoming a Pro!

ropat53's point is entirely up to nicanary.
