The one on the left looks like a wooden buck which panel beater craftsmen used to use to shape prototypes or 'idea' cars, so perhaps this was a competition for young craftsmen to show off their talents/skills to the public, with the finished article being the car on the right. Possibly taken in the 50s.

Looking at the wooden buck again, it is plainly not the form for the car in the background. It actually looks like something being made for a Virgil Exner design, judging by the windsctreen shape.

I think these people build prototypes for Pietro Frua and the cars could be Lloyd Arabella/Alexander coupe (left) and FIAT 600 coupe gentlemen (right)
