The hubcaps look as though there may be a 1950s Packard chassis underneath.

Custom car built on a 1941 (some sources say 1942) Cadillac chassis by a Mr. Rudy Makela. Featuring a mostly aluminum body and a sliding front end section functioning as a hood, it appears to have been restyled at least once during its life. I found pictures of it in two different versions in some early 1950s custom car magazines.

..because this is the right answer!
His car has appeared here before:

but with a completely different front (as per my other pictures below).
I'm not sure which is the earlier and which the later version; I know which one I prefer!

This is (believe it or not) a 1952 Cadillac, custom-bodied by the Indianapolis Power Hammer Works. I believe the car still exists and is undergoing restoration. No accounting for taste, I guess.

This is correct. Apparently it's actually a 1948 model Caddy, and the front end was altered in 1952 to look like this! The customiser was Rudy Makela who has featured on AP before.

My interest was piqued by this car being "discovered" on the TV show "American Pickers". The owner was fully aware of what he had, but seemed to lack funds. Here's an image of the car as it was originally designed - I'm not sure which is worst.

Actually it's the same car like this:
https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2009-37/whaddyacallit-354-solved!-rudy-makela's-1942-cadillac/msg63570/#msg63570

I'm sure it was also featured in one of Paul Jaray's group puzzles long time ago. Remember solving it back then.  ;)

Unfortunately I cannot find it on a search.  :(

Yes, it was alluded to in this thread:

It wasn't merged at the time though as the car's appearance had changed.  Should it be merged with that original puzzle?

Anyone remember the group puzzle?

Here it is: https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2010-38/solved-pj300-spotted-'n-rest/msg118182/#msg118182

IMHO the puzzles should be kept separate because of the different appearance, but each one should be amended with a link to the other one.
