My guess would be a Triumph Herald Convertible, however the exhaustpipe is on the wrong side.....still it is the same for a Vitesse (I checked), so that would not make the difference.

So your guess wouldn't be right...

Is it based on a Reliant or something similar? It looks a bit wobbly

It's based on something but not a Reliant, and I wouldn't say it's anything similar to a Reliant either.

Any connection with the Indian-made Standard Herald?  Or am I up the wrong tree?

All Thriumph Herald's have the exhaust on the other side, it is powered by something else. I agree that it should be a herald if it had the exhaust on the right side.

It's not a Standard Gazel, which is the Herald they made in India (that would be a repost!)

You're right, it's not Herald-based.

I saw this hatchet job on a herald forum last year. Think it's mini based, witha n escort mk3 front end, herald rear and hood, doorglass.

Your memory serves you well!
Here's a picture of the front.
I need the car's name for your point, but I will lock it for you until your next guess to see if you can come up with it.

meredith special, 1989. looking at the window frame it could be a mini doorglass in there, even my herald has smaller gaps than that!
1979 mini 1100 base, escort mk3 front and herald 1200 rear grafted together. Thankfully only 1 made, now in the Netherlands apparently...

I think it's quite good looking for a 'bitsa' - the proportions are OK.  Apart from the fit of the hood
