It's British.
I thought the striping was wholly out of context as no car its age would ever have been adorned with those in period.
So no, they were not added but were there on the picture I found; I couldn't find a picture that gave as good a view of the car without any stripes so I posted it with them in situ anyway!

I was amazed to find it hadn't been puzzled so I thought it was time to put that right..

A couple more pictures (it's actually quite hard to find a rear view):
