Solved: Carchitecture
« on: January 16, 2014, 05:08:01 PM »
I told you there would be another mindbenbing and headscratching group puzzle on its way. Here it is. Below you can see ten cars and ten buildings. The cars range from "too easy for a rookie puzzle" to "hard nut". The buildings are either well known or by well known architects. Your task is to find the car-building pairings, identify the cars and the buildings, and to find out how the pictures are connected. Have fun! Expert participation is highly appreciated.  ;)

No, I resisted the temptation to include Walter Gropius and his Adler design.

Your connection is correct, the car is correct, but I think you have a typo in the number for the building.  ;)
B is locked for you.

C-1 : Helmut Newton Car (I think from Italdesign), and The Newton's Cenotafio (a project from Etienne Louis Bollee).

Yes, C is the Helmut Newton car, a modification of the Italdesign Touareg, and 1 is the never realized cenotaph for Sir Isaac Newton, designed by Étienne-Louis Boullée. Well done!

Everything correct, except that the cars name is not complete. It is a NAG-...

Locked for you, as it is correct, but needs a little detailing.
Which VW is this?
What is the name of the building in Le Havre?
How is Oscar Niemeyer connecting these two?

I'll try A and 4, linked by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen.

4 is an office block in Hamburg designed by Jacobsen, originally for HEW (Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke), and now occupied by the electricity generating company Vattenfall.

Photo A is taken at a famous petrol station at Skovshoved near Copenhagen, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1936. It's now a preserved listed building, but still operates as a petrol station.

I don't know if the bus is part of the puzzle, but it's a Volvo B655 from 1958 with bodywork by Aabenraa Karrosserifabrik. It was built for SAS airlines as a shuttle bus running from Copenhagen airport to the SAS Royal Hotel, which was also designed by Arne Jacobsen. I have seen in several sources that Jacobsen designed the SAS shuttle buses, but I haven't been able to confirm whether that's true or not. The bus in the photo is now preserved by the Danish Bushistorisk organisation.

Oscar Niemeyer designed the National Congress during the late 1950s and early 1960s while he served as chief architect for Brazil's new capital city, Brasília.

A perfect answer (as always  ;) )

The HEW building is only 300 meters away from my office. I see it every working day.

Car and building are correct, your connection was unknown to me, but it surely earns the point.
I had in mind what Joao wrote, that Oscar Niemeyer designed the Brazilian capital Brasilia.
