Car number 8 is an Alfa Romeo Alfasud Valentino, and Place 12 is Rudolph Valentino house in Whitley Heights L.A., I suppose.

Alright.

I've identified place 5, whose name evokes a car manufacturer, but I don't see a car of this brand in the remaining cars. Is that a case of tricky connection, or is there an obscure car from this brand featured here ?
Place 5 is not connected in the most common way as XYZ place name = XYZ car name.

Well done!
(Yes, I know, the Alfasud Valentino has nothing to do with Rudolph Valentino.  ;D )

OK. Half wild guess :
- Place 5 is Passage Cottin in Paris.
- Car 6 is Desgouttes voiturette made in Lyon in 1946 by someone from the Desgoutte family, from Cottin-Desgouttes fame.

Place 5 is correct, car 6 isn't. No comment on the connection.

Almost correct. Locked for you to find the exact car, as it is not the Apollo Verona, but very closely related. Place and connection are correct.

I think I found it: a BMW-engined Verona 3,5 Cabriolet, built by E.S.W. Automobile of Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Time to get this puzzle solved, and not just let it languish.  Car 2: A car (possibly an Opel Kapitän from about 1939) equipped with an Imbert type Holzgas generator. - Place 4: A scene from the 1949 British film "The Third Man" which was filmed on location in early postwar Vienna.

It's the connection that I'm having trouble with.  The location of the car, given the marque and Holzgas generator, could be early post war Vienna, it might even be a scene from the film as well.  However, I suspect that you want something more for a connection than just Vienna.  The only other connection that I can think of is that the film's plot dealt with stolen and altered/diluted black market penicillin, which might be somewhat analogous to using wood as a motor fuel via the Holzgas generator.  A reach, I know, but it is all I can come up with.

Car 2 is equipped with an Imbert Holzgas generator, but it is not an Opel Kapitän, it is an even bigger car.

The picture for Place 4 is taken from the great movie "The Third Man". The Place is in Vienna, but Vienna is not precise enough to make the connection to one of the remaining cars.

No comment on the connection.

Car 2: 1937 Graf-Ford V8, manufactured in Vienna, and equipped with an Imbert type Holzgas generator - Place 4: A scene from the 1949 British film "The Third Man" which was filmed on location in early postwar Vienna.  The connection is the car was manufactured in Vienna by Graf & Stift, and the film was shot (manufactured) in Vienna.

Car 2 is not a Gräf-Ford.

No comment on the connection.

Going by your hint that this is a very large car, and sticking with my previous train of thought regarding Graf & Stift, I'll try:

Car 2: 1938 Graf & Stift SP9, manufactured in Vienna, and equipped with an Imbert type Holzgas generator - Place 4: A scene from the 1949 British film "The Third Man" which was filmed on location in early postwar Vienna.  The connection is the car was manufactured in Vienna by Graf & Stift, and the film was shot (manufactured) in Vienna.

Car 2 is not any kind of Gräf & Stift, not even Austrian.

Well there goes that train of thought, so I'll try:

Car 2: 1938 Cadillac, equipped with an Imbert type Holzgas generator - Place 4: A scene from the 1949 British film "The Third Man" which was filmed on location in early postwar Vienna.  But the only connection I can think of is the car belonged to occupation forces in postwar Vienna where the film was shot.

Now, that's a lot better. It is in fact a 1939 Cadillac. I fear you have to find out more about the car in order to make the right connection.  ;)

Well Car 2 appears to be a Cadillac Series 75 or Series 90 (I really can't tell the difference from this angle), but I don't how this makes any connection to a 1949 film shot in Vienna, unless the car appeared in the film, which I wouldn't know as I have never viewed the film.  Hopefully I don't need to figure out owner of this particular Cadillac, which I fear would be virtually impossible.

Well, the connection has to do with its well-known owner.  :(
And a little hint: it is not connected to Place 4, so you have to search again.

Ah well, if not related to Place 4, then:

Car 2: 1939 Cadillac belonging to Marshal Philippe Pétain, Chief of State of Vichy France 1940-1944.  -  Place 7: The opera house in Vichy, France.  The connection is Vichy, France.

I told you it was easy.  ;D

BTW, the holzgas transformation was done by Karosserie Wendler in Germany.

Place 5 is correct, car 9 is not a Cottin-Desgouttes (or related to it).

Car 9: 1913 Howard cyclecar from Sutton, UK - Place 4: The British actor Trevor Howard in a  scene from the 1949 British film "The Third Man".  The connection is both are British, and both are named Howard.
