It looks like a 1947-48 Maserati A6GCS.  But this is Autopuzzles!

Was this a one-off homebuilt chassis, or a Maserati engine fitted into a kit-car chassis?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

HRG-Maserati aka The Goodwood Special

Quote
"In 1949 a well known early BBC presenter,Mr John Gilbert, commissioned HRG to build his "dream" sports/racing car. HRG based the car on an extended wheelbase version of their standard 1500 chassis. Gilbert supplied the engine, a pre war 1100 Maserati straight eight.  HRG Chief Mechanic, Fred Mead constructed the body in the style of the latest Maserati A6GCS sport/racer. A heady and exotic concept for poverty stricken post war Britain!

The Gilberts lived in the south of England and were founder members of the Goodwood Racing Club. Their HRG was raced by both Robert and his wife in many Goodwood events from 1950 until 1958 as chronicled by Robert Barker in his " A Record of Motor Racing at Goodwood".  Neither the car nor it's owners were particularly quick but the car was reliable and appeared frequently not only at Goodwood but also at Silverstone and other UK club circuits.

Eventually their son Christopher inherited the car and replaced the engine, first with a Ford unit and then a 1500 Singer OHC engine in an effort to obtain more power. Finally after some 30 years in the same family it was sold and laid up without use for a further 20 years when Bob Andrews bought it in 1995 and sold it to Jeremy Broad a couple of years later.  Jeremy, being a Jaguar expert, started to restore the car and solve the power problem by installing a period Jaguar engine at the same time. Unfortunately ill health prevented completion and in 2013 we acquired the car and a complete chassis up restoration is being conducted in our workshops."

That's a new one for me. You learn all the time.

The photo does not show the engine clearly, but it looks complex. The photo suggests a year  in the 1970s, and by then the son of the builder had the car. He fitted Ford and Singer engines, but they don't look like that! Was the Maserati engine (a pre-WW2 1100cc motor) still installed as late as the 1970s?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

I remember the car at Eight Clubs Silverstone race meetings in the late 1970s by which time it was Singer-engined like other HRGs
That racing photo could be just that, with typical mixed racing - we had some Porsche 911/912 when they were pretty new.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong
