Well, with the white "surface" I might as well ask if it's on the Bonneville salt flats.

On a slightly different tack, I think the old car on the right is a Locomobile steamer from the early years of the 20th century. I don't know about the racer, but on the far left in the background is (I think) a 1950 Buick Roadmaster.

So is this a historic vehicle event from some time in the early 1950s?

Does the script on the race car say "Hill Special"?

Is this Daytona Beach? Maybe a commemoration event or anniversary of the AAA?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

The picture was taken at the summit of Pike's Peak, Colorado, at an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent by an automobile.

On 12 August 1901 a Locomobile steamer driven by C.A. Yont and W.B. Felker became the first car to reach the summit, at 4,300 metres above sea level.

The puzzle photo was taken on 17 August 1951. The passenger in the Locomobile is identified as Mrs Yont, though I don't know what her relationship was to the original driver.

An annual hill climb competition has been held at Pike's Peak since 1916, making it one of the oldest motorsport events in the US.

Well-solved.

I assume Mrs. Yont to be the original driver's wife. If either was his daughter or sister, and retained the name Yont, they would be Miss Yont; if they had married, either would have at least a hyphenated last name - at least in the quaint parlance of 1951.

The lady could, of course, be C A Yont's daughter-in-law   8)
