Up!  After a short visit with the rookie(s), this one is ready for the experts.

Who is driving these cars? - , 'Gentlemen of the press'
on what race track? -  Daytona
equipped with what sort of tires? - BF Goodrich remould tyres?
Duncan Rollo

The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know.

sixtee5cuda

Not members of the press, not Daytona.  Not BF Goodrich, not remoulds.

:sigh: :shakehead:  :bag:   Totally incorrect! (par for the course these days)

nicanary

They look for all the world like Mk2 Ford Cortinas - they're LHD which suggests the US. Is it Talladega ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

sixtee5cuda

They are in fact, Cortinas at Talladega.

LOCKED for nicanary, as the other two pieces may fall into place with that information.

nicanary

This is a long shot - are they testing Avon radial road tyres prior to the introduction of Formula Ford as a new racing class ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

sixtee5cuda

Nothing to do with Avon tires.

nicanary

The opening season spelled trouble with tyres (tires) and Firestone withdrew from supplying for the race - is this a testing session by them ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

sixtee5cuda

Firestone was involved

nicanary

Were they NASCAR drivers testing new radials ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

sixtee5cuda

They were not NASCAR "drivers"

The 1969 Ford Cortina GT's are driven by Bill France Sr. (car no.6) and Bill France Jr. (car no.66)

The Event is the IMSA sanctioned 1969 Talladega Grand Prix for international Sedans

Tyres are Firestone Cavallino street radials

The cars were part of a lot that were damaged on a ship from England and were bought from Ford cheap and "straightened out raced by the Frances .

Sr. finished 17th and Jr 9th

Thank you for all the information, WayneB.

The puzzle remains LOCKED for nicanary.

Nicanary, with WayneB's information, can you provide more information about the tires used?

(At the request of Nicanary, I may unlock the puzzle for others to provide the missing information.)

nicanary

Please unlock. This story is news to me.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Unlocked

One vital piece of information about the tires used hasn't been mentioned yet.  Provide this piece, and earn the point.

RayTheRat

First radial tires used at Talladega?

sixtee5cuda

Not the first radials on the track

nicanary

This was really just a marketing exercise - so was the whole field equipped with Firestone Cavallino radials ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

sixtee5cuda

Giving away the answer:

Not all four tires were Firestones

You will have to excuse me  , I have never seen a puzzle remain LOCKED to allow three separate answers on here before  ???

The cars had Goodyears on one end and Firestones on the other.

sixtee5cuda

WayneB finishes the puzzle and gets the point.

My puzzles are locked when I post the word LOCKED, and remain locked until I post the word "unlocked".
