Solved: Wendax 850 - Wainwright Butterfly
« on: March 26, 2013, 03:21:26 AM »
It probably had quite a large turning circle.

For one point, please respond and identify this car.

The RHD doesn't match the presumed country of origin. It's not supposed to be from Britain.

All I have is a name. I don't even know whether it was ever built.

That car is the twin of a Hyundai Stellar. Has it been converted to a hovercraft ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

I don't know, but I don't think so.

I don't know what car it was based on (if it ever went beyond this sketch stage).

The indicators look like a 1980 Ford Escort ones.
Also the roof style with this chrome trimmed windows calls Ford to me.

But I have no idea.

I only see a sense in  covering wheels to improve the aerodynamics of a car.

Strangely enough the rest of the body shoes a very edgy and conventional design
from the end of the 1970īs/beginning of the 1980īs...

Those are pretty much the same thoughts I had when I first saw this car.
As I said before, I only have a name that was placed in this very picture. I have no information, if or where this car was built. The company's name matches with an American one, but I can't say for sure that it is the same company.

Automatic translation:

"The Wainwright Motor Corporation was founded in the United States and showed a large four-door notchback sedan: with one-piece curved windshield, with a 'ponton' design and an angled grille, as well as fully-clad wheels and rectangular headlamps, and a small rear spoiler on the trunk lid. It is not known in which year the Butterfly appeared, but some style elements like the grille drawn across the width of the car, with built-in rectangular headlights, inclined front, a rear spoiler lip are in the style of 70s."

It's not much but it's all I have.  :-\

Yes, that's all I had from that not-so-reliable source. I hoped for some other information.  :sigh:

The Wainwright Butterfly existed only in the mind of Basil Wainwright a convicted con man. Between the USA and the UK he conned people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars for projects that never were. He even had relationships of a business nature with Carroll Shelby (yes THE Carroll Shelby) and FORD for an ignition system that never worked as touted.
Nicknamed in the papers as "KING CON" he was convicted on 22 counts of theft, fraud and forgery in 1983. He was also sentenced to prison for his "Ozone Therapy" scam that claimed to cure everything from Alzheimers to AIDS.

Apparently: "WAINWRIGHT MOTOR CORPORATION was formed on 1981-06-24 in Michigan by BASIL WAINWRIGHT"
