Yes, it is a NSU 10/20  at the 1909 Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt. The driver's last name is Schmidt, but he is not Christian Schmidt who was the founder of NSU.

Talk about dumb luck.  I used Christian Schmidt, NSU founder's name, as the driver, since I knew no other name to use.  This morning I learn that in 1909, Christian Schmidt had been dead for about twenty years (died at age 39)!  Fortunately, as you stated, the actual drivers name was also Schmidt (related?).  My answer should have read: 1909 NSU 10/20 taken at the Prince Henry Trials of 1909 (in Munich?), with Karl Schmidt driving.

That's the name I was after, though I must admit (after a look in the right book) that it is not correct. NSU started with three cars at the Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt in 1909. All three cars were 10/20 HP taken out of the regular production. One was driven by NSU's managing director Carl Schmidt, his copilot was the engineer Fidelis Böhler (who will be famous for his Hanomag 2/10 PS in the future). But the pictured car was driven by Albert Schmidt-Schröder. The Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt started in Berlin and went over 1836 kilometers during seven days, with stops at Breslau, Tatra, Budapest, Vienna and finish in Munich. All three cars were driven to Berlin and from Munich back to Neckarsulm, thus adding 1200 kilometers to the total. The picture was taken at the beginning of that tour in Neckarsulm.
