Hydrogen-powered 1970 AMC Gremlin, developed by a team at UCLA with numerous corporate sponsors. The car featured a Ford Boss 351 engine and was reportedly capable of up to 68 mpg. Supposedly the customizer George Barris was also somehow involved.

And the point goes to Fyreline.  It is the UCLA Hydrogen-powered AMC Gremlin.

I have it as a 1972, but other years may be involved.  No Gremlin had a C-pillar that small.  The AMC Spirit Kammback did though.

That could be said about 95% of the cars on the AutoPuzzles site.  ;D

Yeah, the first web site I found it at said it was a 1970, but on closer inspection I'm sure you're right - it started as a 1972. That C-pillar is a puzzler, too. Maybe that was George Barris's "kustom" contribution?

The C-pillar and rear quarter area really is interesting.
It almost looks like the folks at the customizer's shop took a Gremlin/Hornet front window, turned it backwards, sliced it at a slight angle, then merged it back into the bodyside.  The shape is a little different from the 1979 (onwards) AMC Spirit sedan.
I understand the car was powered by a Ford 351 V8 with a modified carburetor.

Thanks for the additional photos. Still can't figure out that rear side window modification, though . . . It hardly seems worth the effort it must have taken to do.
