"Targhe di ferro", stands for Iron plates; in Italy plates were iron made since 1963, than plastic overcame. The sistem with two letters (to indicate the county), followed by numbers began in 1927 and carried on until 1985; in 1976 the letters turned into orange coloured ones...very ugly.
In Italy the personal plates have been introduced last year, but I haven't seen one yet. Plates couldn't be transferred from a car to another, so for each number there is one car only. Actually, in early '30, some numbers of dismantled cars were used again, so we find some '33-'35 cars with very low numbers, that could appear from '27-'28, otherwise the plates are a good friend to date a car.
I registered some 13500 Italian plates, but the job is far to be ended.
Nice to meet someone who shares my hobby.
