Bill Murray

An interesting vehicle.

Quite by accident, I found this photo today which shows in the rear files several vehicles that match many of the ID features of your puzzle ambulance.  The design of the cooling louvers in the side of the motor hood, the style of the wheels, the windscreen wipers etc. etc.

The photo (from ebay), was supposedly taken in 1939 and as many of the vehicles are early war German, I assume after the battle of Poland was over.  I did a pretty good search of German/Austrian vehicles of the era as they were used in the invasion of Poland and came up with nothing.  I also did a search of my Polish files and came up with nothing.

Still, I now think it may be some sort of Polish marque since there are so many of them and they look to be in very good condition.

Am I closer to the truth??

No Bill, it's not from Poland, but your research was in the right direction.

A bit more research early in the morning my time.

It is a Steyr 740.  350 produced from 1937-1939.

Here is a rear view.

Perfect...that is the picture I've thought to use at the beginning, I like the spring suspension of the bed.
Another point for you.

Bill Murray

Thanks........

Note also the suspension system for the upper bed.

They just don't make things like that anymore.  Modern ambulance equipment is rather crude nowadays but the cost is astronomical for a ride in one to the Hospital.

I now see that I misspelled the model, I typed 40 but I meant 740..... Your lucky day Bill !

Bill Murray

OUCH!!!

Sorry from my side, mekubb.
But, as you probably know, the Typ 40 was quite different from the later 740 range so I assumed you were sort of "guessing"  and I was already pretty close anyhow so posted my answer.

Better luck another day, this happens to me rather often as well.

No worries Bill ! I intended to type 740 but missed the 7.... such things happen !
