though the source doesn't specific the mechanical base, I have very good reason to doubt that it is based on a Japanese vehicle.

I do not think it was a one off and it was made between 1990-1995

Another obscure Chinese SUV to lose some sleep over.  Is this perhaps a:       Yunbao YB 2030?

no

A couple of hints:
- the manufacturer is still around, making buses
- its parent company is active in a typical Chinese industry
- the puzzle car was based on a locally built version of the Beijing Jeep BJ212
- the model designation is not that far off, it starts with 2 and has 4 digits (but there are letters before and after)

Thanks for the clues.  I haven't been able to locate a picture, but the only vehicle, on my current list of prospects, that seems to match the clues is a: Shenfei SFQ2022JF.

I could torture you a bit more, but as you are 99 per cent there, I declare this solved!

This is the Shenfei (sometimes referred to as Shenli) SFQ2022JD. I don't have the original picture with me right now, but I will post it later.

Here's an extract from their brochure and a pic of the donor vehicle.

Very nicely done, congratulations!

Thanks Pal, I couldn't have done it (or at least not as quickly) without your clues.  I think the difference in our model numbers could be that the SFQ2022JD is a closed top vehicle, while the SFQ2022JF may have been an open top version like the donor vehice.

Did you remember to add my point?  I seem to remember that I had 268 prior to this puzzle, although I may be misremembering.
