It's a Crossley "Silver" 15.7hp Tourer specially built to order for the Governor of Nyasaland.  The model was not usually available with that body style. Production was 1930-34.

(I remember Nyasaland from my days collecting stamps back in the 50s - presumably the Governor drove round in his tropical "whites" with a white tepee hat with plumes, making sure the locals were aware that he was in charge. What the hell is it called today ? - Malawi, Ruanda, Burundi ? Ah those days of yesteryear......)

NB - for tepee read topee. He did not I imagine drive round with a Native American tent on his head. Or possibly he did - the sun does funny things....

That is indeed the car.
Nyasaland was part of the old colonial Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, but got its independence in the early 1960s when Dr Hastings Banda formed Malawi out of it.  The remainder of course became Rhodesia under Iain Smith then latterly Zimbabwe.

Thus ends the history lesson of the British Empire for our overseas members !  :D

Not quite:  Northern Rhodesia became Zambia with Kenneth Kaunda in charge.  Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia with Ian Smith as PM and later Zimbabwe with Robert Mugabe at the helm.  And as stated, Nyasaland became Malawi under Hastings Banda.
The Rhodesias were colonies while Nyasaland was a protectorate, not that it made much difference to the way it was governed..

Nearly right!
The Federation was a short-lived job from 1953-63 and before that the three colonial entities were Nyasaland, Northern Rhodesia and Southern Rhodesia, names bestowed on the administrative areas by the British South Africa Company which administered the area.
Nyasaland became Malawi under Dr. Hastings Banda and N. Rhodesia became Zambia under Kenneth Kaunda in 1964. Southern Rhodesia was then called Rhodesia for a while during Ian Smith's attempts to achieve independence on rather different terms from the others and in 1979 it achieved independence as Zimbabwe with Robert Mugabe becoming President soon after.
As one who lived in Southern Rhodesia in 1948/9 perhaps I shouldn't comment on the disastrous similarities between the three men I've  just named.

Posted without having seen what Duncan wrote - either my machine or its broadband link was/is very slow. At least we tell the same basic tale!

The "disastrous similarities" being Geneva bank accounts.....?

Of course - I'd completely forgotten about Northern Rhodesia so thank you for straightening me out!
I should have checked my history books first!
