Vereinigte Werkstätten in Munich?

I have located an image of what appears to be the same car with the rear wheel cover removed, and the website asserts that it's not a 319.
Not the name I have. Could you post the picture or PM me where I can find that picture of the similar car?

Bubenator and I probably have stumbled across the same site.

After my fiasco with the Zündapp/NSU question I was reluctant to say anything.

Here is the photo and it is merely identified as a "customized 1939 BMW 328" with coachwork by Müller Karosseriebau of Frieberg im Bresgau.

I am not looking for a point, just backing up Bube.  It also looks larger than a 319 and has the typical motor hood of a 328 for what that is worth.

Bill, yes, that's the same picture I was referring to.  Another website simply says that 59 of the 464 BMW 328 vehicles produced were body-less chassis intended for outside coachbuilders.  This particular vehicle was bodied by Muller / Freiburg.

Hi again Gerd and Bube:

A most challenging puzzle for sure.

I hope I am not going overboard here, but just some thoughts.

Trying to be very accurate, there are some questions about the photo I posted that Bube and I found.  Obviously, very poor quality, shot from a very poor angle.  Also, very large which I did not realize until I saw it here.  You can adjust that on your PC.

Still, you can see that the general outline of the car is very similar if not quite exactly the same as Gerd's photo.  The wheels match, the engine hood hinge system matches, the door hinge style matches.  The shape of the rear  1/4 window is just a tad different but that may be the angle of the photo.  What is missing on our photo is the hinge for that 1/4 window.  So, maybe a 90% match and what I really miss is the detail of the louvres in the motor hood which are different both from the normal 319 and 328.

On to the coachbuilder.  Such a company still exists according to Google.de but nothing of the history of the company can I find.  None of my BMW reference books mentions Müller as a body supplier nor do my normal internet sources that deal with such questions.  Complete dead end.

As to the "customer", I have Googled everything I could find on BMW executives of the 1937-1940 time period, every engineer, designer, stylist etc. and tried to match those names to a "car".  Nothing.  Did the same with BMW racing drivers of the same time period, nothing.  Did the same with sports personalities, politicians and military figures, nothing.

I am going to have one more try with movie personalities just for the heck of it.

This is not for a point, Gerd, this is just for "me".

Bube is on it, lets hope he finds the answer.

Bill
Cheers

Thank you all. I stand corrected. It appears to be the same car by Blechnerei Müller which was already featured here before: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=22338.0

I took the picture from an ad where somebody is looking for information about a BMW 319 built for Adolf Zimber by Fritz Lapp, where the puzzle picture supposedly shows that particular car. I would have guessed a BMW 328 myself without that accompanying text. I should have followed my doubts, but quite a few BMW specials used 319 parts as well as 328 parts.

I'll give bubenator his well-deserved point. This puzzle should be merged with the original 328 Müller puzzle.

Well, Wendax, to your credit, the 3-stripe hood molding / motif shown here is most similar to the Ambi-Budd 319 Cabriolets of the mid-1930's, though the stripes were contained on an inset panel rather than integral with the hood.

I don't know of any other 328's with the 3-stripe hood besides this one here.
