Solved - MJW #098 - Wilen Triumph TR2
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:03:47 PM »
It's obvious what this car is but which company (not individual) offered this modification and when?
One point on offer.

Can't say I remember this, but Kingsbury puts me in mind of Daphne Arnott's place, more usually associated with superchargers and a few competition cars. Can't even remember if it was Arnott Engineering Co. or just Arnott's garage and later on (1966ish) it was doing car conversions for disabled drivers.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Not Arnott's Allan.
The name of this company is 5 letters and starts with W.

If I remember correctly Daphne Arnott's establishment was named Arnott's Garages (Harlesden) Ltd.
Another interesting story......

Ah yes NW10, not NW9! Much the same to those of us who just knew the way to places, but not what their location was called.

This is a total guess, but is the missing part of the company title 'Willcocks'? The car appears to be the Triumph TR2 raced and hillclimbed by Doug Willcocks. The photo of the car is from Silverstone in 1957 (?). Or it could be something else entirely...

I think you are on your way to solving it Hezza.
It is Doug Willcocks at Silverstone May 1957.
Part of his surname was part of the name of the company.
I'll lock it for you until your next reply as you are close......

Thanks Woodinsight. Erm, is it 'Cocks Engineering Company'? 'Will(s) Engineering Co'? I hope it's not the former...

Not the former thankfully!
It is WILxx - just the last two letters required!

Is this puzzle open again?

I'm guessing 'Wilks'?! If this is wrong please open things up for Carnut as I'm intrigued to know what the answer is! I did a bit of digging about this car (without any reference to the company name...) and apparently it was built with the Mille Miglia in mind. Most of its outings were at Silverstone and Prescott, so I guess Mr Willcocks (who also used to compete in the Steyr-Allard) set his sight a bit lower...

If I may take Hezza's invitation then Woodinsight, I believe this car was made by the Wilco Engineering Co!

Thanks Hezza and Carnut but I'm afraid it's not Wilks or Wilco.
I don't know how I can give another clue without giving the answer away.
I'll wait a few days before I do anything just in case any other suggestions are made.

Not that, sorry.
Try a vowel after the L (another clue!)
i.e. - WIL (vowel)x

We have a WINNER!
How did you do that?
I have to say that I don't know the origin of the name Wilen - Willcocks yes but also a partner called Len?

I'll call it a sixth sense!  I wanted to get this one because sidescreen Triumphs are favorites of mine, even though I don't own one.    :(
