Apparently they worked in a Seat factory, where they had a boss who always said "Dale estopa a la maquina" to them, and they took the name Estopa from that. I have no idea what it means!
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Estopa is a bundle of fibber (flax, hemp, jute), or shredded cloth used instead of a rag to clean off oil.
Probably the word in English would be tow?

That was my translation too, Ropat.  "Give a tow/push to the machine".  I understand their boss used this phrase to indicate that he wanted them to work harder/faster.  How that word evolved into the name of the duo still escapes me as it is out of context as just a single word.

Now, OGB has to decide which car he is going with as I have some stuff to post that I cannot post until it is declared solved.

OK, this is not my puzzle to solve, I am just having fun here and since Spanish is my 3d language, I can stay with it.

So, are you thinking of the Seat Estopa 124/1434 Special Edition 2???????

Sorry, Car no.1 is the Seat Panda. But there's a second car.
The link (that relates the two cars) is what I was saying was very famous in the late 90's.

That's it!!!! You've got it. The song La Raja de tu falda 1997 by the Spanish duo Estopa

'No se que me dio por la espalda
cuando vi la raja de tu falda
que un Seat Panda se me cruzo
y se comió el parachoques de mi Ford Escort'

(That was given me in the back
when I saw your skirt slit
a Seat Panda crossed me
and ate the bumper of my Ford Escort)

Hmmm.  Thank you!!

Very interesting question and without trying to be ungracious, I think this one might be called a multiple choice question.

In all, I have found four very distinct connections between the duo and automobile brands.

The song, advertisements for the Seat brand, the tuning company MTV and advertisements for the Skoda brand.
I am linking one of the Skoda advertisements here.

I wonder if you would consider giving Ropat a point as well as he properly identified two very legitimate and high profile connections between the duo and automotive brands.

I think you're right. I had not seen this ad before. But it's fair. He deserves a point.

Point for ropat53

Just two more comments.

Part of the enjoyment of this Forum is that you learn so many new things not always related to only automobiles/trucks.

Sometimes this is good, sometimes it is good and also expensive.

Having now watched perhaps 20 short videos of the duo Estopa, I now find I must get some way, the whole collection on DVD.
Even so I now have 73 years, I still like this style of music/singing.  I will be going to one of the large video stores here in Atlanta tomorrow to see what I can find.

Also, even so Spanish is my 3d language, may I offer a different translation of part of the song.
Beginning with the words "no se", I think a better translation might be "I don't know what hit me on the back".

Happy New Year my Friend.

Autopuzzles is great because of the cars (of course) and the people like you (two) and many others.
