I reconized the dashboard design...so I think it is a DB 2/4 based...now the challenge is harder, I'll do my best, if I will not find a path I'll ask you to unlock.

I spent two hours in googling about Aston Martin basse, or rebodied, or special...without any result. The front grill is a Swallow Doretti's one, so I suppose it is a home-made car, realized using an old chassis (perhaps a prewar one) and a one-off body. I have no clue so please unlock.

Doubtless db 2/4, I give the point to targhediferro ! :)
1 other point for the one who will find the origin of the car (with the proof !)

The photo includes a BMC 1100 which was introduced in August 1962. I suspect that the puzzle car was based on a 1952 Aston Martin DB2/4 chassis. Quite why anyone would want to rebody a beautiful car with what looks like a backstreet GRP body is beyond me - maybe the original car had been crashed?

The registration number dates from late 1949, so too early for a DB 2/4.
As the registration would remain with the original chassis whatever bodywork it was given that should give a clue which model it is based on.  Perhaps a 2-litre sports or even a very early DB2; I don't know when the very first ones appeared?  Aston Martin experts?

The DB2 appeared in April 1950, and the DB2/4 in 1953. I'm pretty sure that the car is a rebodied pre-war model, and the owner was trying to update its appearance with a barchetta-style clothing. It doesn't look stylish enough IMO to be the work of a known coachbuilder.

(PS when I say pre-war model, I mean a catalogued model from before WW2, but still available for sale in 1949)

According to Wikipedia, of the 15 Aston Martin 2-Litre Sports (1948-1950) produced, "one was shipped as a chassis for custom coachwork".  Although I agree that the coachwork doesn't look very professional, might this be it?

4popoid is right. It is an Aston Martin 2-Litre Sports (aka DB1), chassis number AMC/49/8. It was modified again in its later lfe:

Perhaps it's a good idea to add to the heading that this car was built by Swallow, hence the resemblance to the Doretti. I think the title should be '1949 Aston Martin DB1 rebodied by Swallow'
