Rom Carmel 1301 estate !

cmetisse

Sorry, I meant Rom Carmel 1300 Estate, as it doesn't seem to have the longer nose of the latest 1301.

Built in Israel, GRP body, Simca (or Rootes ?) engine... Produced from 1970 (?) to 1977.

Quite so!

Quite so indeed, but the mechanicals were neither Simca, nor Rootes (Chrylser UK), but rather Triumph (Herald). ;)

Sorry to correct you. The Sabra Sussita used Triumph Herald mechanics for sure, but the cooperation with BL came to an end in 1971. The engines used in the Rom Carmel 1300 and 1301 came from the Ford Escort, though some sources also claim that Simca engines were fitted.

We don't have (yet) any japanese, but can we count on a israelite contributor to let us saw the light ?  ;)

Djetset

No need to apologies Wendax, as Ford engines were certainly fitted too (which I should have mentioned) though some Triumph Herald engines were also used in the some post-Sussita Rom Carmel's (perhaps using-up old stock?) as there was one in the UK for years (a red 4-door saloon) that used to attend Triumph club events and shows, with Herald running-gear.  I'll see if I can find some of my old (pre-digital) photos of it and add them here.  The Simca engined-examples were news to me though.

I've read about the Simca engines on the AROC pages about Autocars/Rom Carmel.

I still think it could be a Rootes Avenger fitted on the 1301 and perhaps some 1300, as bore and stroke according to a few yearbook (Auto Journal, Revue Automobile Suisse...) are exactly the same.

But everything is quite confusing about this curious adventure. I've even read about a short-lived assembly of Hino Contesse in Haifa...  :o

If someone here can read hebrew, there is an article about it on wikipedia. And an israelite car website, but their articles are available in english.
I'm sure Africa is the very last unknown continent for car culture !  ;)

I remember seeing some of those Hino Contessa in Israel when I visited that country back in 1984. I recall that they were built by Kaiser-Ilin.
