Actually, WayneB is onto something.  This model was used to create the 1971 Matchbox Lesney 'Superfast' model "Gruesome Twosome".
Later variations of the Matchbox version deleted the chrome engines, making the car look very similar to the puzzle car.
This car appears to be a model called the AMC Phaze II.

Dave Puhl is the builder.  He was associated with (maybe worked for) Darryl Starbird.
AMC is the engine Puhl chose to use.
The car was completed around 1970 and featured at the Chicago Autorama.
It also appeared on the cover of Rod & Custom magazine.

The car was probably completed earlier than 1970 - possibly 1966, after Puhl left Starbird's shop and started his own.
The car is currently located at Starbird's "National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame Museum" in Oklahoma.
