Despite appearances, it's not a Cooper..

Are you one hundred per cent positive is not a Cooper?
I may be wrong but the picture appears to be taken from Doug Nye's Cooper Cars book and the man standing first from left should be Bill Aston, who was the owner of the car, based on a Formula 500 Cooper MK V chassis..

It did use a Cooper-based frame, but that doesn't make this car a Cooper!
It had numerous differences, some of which were later applied by John Cooper to his cars but which this one pre-dated.  Also the bodywork was close but not identical.  And it didn't originally use Cooper suspension.
But you are very close to the answer, so I'll lock it for you to look into the Bill Aston angle.

The picture on page 55 of Doug Nye's book certainly says "COOPER" on the nose and headrest!

I can't comment on that since I haven't seen it, but I have the whole story of this car from an authoritive and generally reliable and accurate site, which I will post when it's been solved, which I'm sure it is about to be!

I can tell you that it does say that this car was one of those smart-looking Cooper clones running on enthusiasm and a right budget, and it was known generally by the name I'm looking for.  But I also need the engine for the point!

Below is the original photo I used, but I can't read what it says across the front, although it does say 'Cooper' on the headrest fairing:

I think you may have Aston Butterworth in mind and I think I have read the article  where the word clone is used. I have the feeling it's actually referring to the formula 2 car and that the car of the puzzle is indeed a Cooper T17 with a Jap engine

Hiawatha, I think you are looking at the same article as I am.  I agree about the Aston-Butterworth which was front engined and had a chassis that was a near copy of a Cooper-Bristol Mk1.

Now that I have more information in front of me Hiawatha is clearly correct.
When I first found the picture on a reliable site it was described as the Aston-Butterworth NB41 and gave a full interesting story.  Unfortunanately they had used the wrong picture and have now changed it to the Formula 2 A-B car having realised their mistake!  Idiot here was taken in by the story and posted this car as the Aston-Butterworth, thinking Bill Aston had make a Cooper clone and this was it..  Hmmm..

I suppose my picture is a re-post, so it'll have to be merged:

So it's a point to Hiawatha and my 3000th puzzle ends in ignominy!

You're right - I didn't look back far enough..
I'll give him a point as well but won't take yours away as you did give me information I was looking for at the time (Bill Aston's name), albeit incorrectly as it turned out..

Thanks.
