No -definitely British. Sorry for my confusing clue.

The photo was taken in the country which was its eventual home.

Kieft?

No. It is a single-seater based on a well-known British sports car.

No. More a low-volume maker.

Bingo. A well-earned point.

There are several HRG racers which have been converted from sports cars, but this monoposto remains an unresolved mystery to me.  One caption I found says that the car was imported , and that would suggest that it was the car Peter Clarke commissioned for him to take part in late 40s F2. However it looks lower and sleeker than that car, and it was reasonably successful in Australian racing. Are they one and the same car ?

I've no idea.  I found the same picture on an Australian site.  I agree with you that it it doesn't look like the photo of Peter Clarke's car in Jenks's Racing Car Pocketbook.  The bonnet line is lower and the grille is more upright.  It does resemble the "Le Mans Lightweight" cycle winged sports car
