The unit they were developing for the Vega in the early 70's.

Of course they are NSU R080 Wankels.

I have never seen the US version with the smog pump fitted, which is what made me think GM Vega..........

Thoroughly correct!  Those are NSU Ro80 Wankel engines.  Lots of them!
