What is this car, what made it unusual and what was its purpose? A point if you know

It's an Auto Union 1000 and it would seem to have a second engine in the rear.

Looks as if it may have been a donkey test-mobile for perhaps a proposed Audi, using this stretched Auto Union to test suspension, etc.

This is fairly close. It's an Auto Union but not a prototype for the Audi as far as I know. The solution is somewhat simpler than that.

It has been driven too fast when it caught a hole on the road...

A chassis test vehicle for a proposed front-drive commercial vehicle (van, perhaps) with strut-type front suspension and forward-control cab? :-\

Assuming the lock has expired after nearly a fortnight:
is it a prototype / test mule for a twin engined four-wheel-drive vehicle for the military?

At the end of my small store of thoughts on this one. Last try, is it an NSU Ro80 testbed?

This car was of use for tests on the trial ground of Daimler-Benz in 1959 to try several reports ways / wheelbase with the aim of the next model Auto Union to be taken out, ' Fr 102 '. The wheelbase was adaptable on several length...

Jean-Marie H, was that a guess or did you find the solution?
In that case I'll award the point and move it to the Solved section.

Barrett was here few hours ago.
I really hope everything is OK with him.
In the meantime we try to rule his puzzles.
Point for you, Jean-Marie H!
Any idea of what should I call it?
"Cette tuture a servi à des tests sur le terrain d'essais de Daimler-Benz en 1959 afin d'essayer plusieurs rapports voies/empattement en vue du prochain modèle Auto Union à sortir, la "F 102". L'empattement était réglable sur plusieurs longueurs."
