East German EMW 343 prototype from around 1952. This was an attempt to both modernize and get away from the previous BMW look.

To be precise, it is not an EMW 343, but an Awtowelo BMW 343, because it appeared in 1951. The marque name changed to EMW in January 1952.

I believe this to be an EMW 342 from 1950/51.
One of the vehicles made in Eisenach after the Russians moved the 327/328 tooling to the Eastern Zone of Germany.

Not quite, but you're from around the right era and it was probably part of the same programme..
But it wasn't designated as a 342..

Hmm.

Well, never trust the Internet.
Further searching would indicate a BMW of 1951 but several sources still indicate the model as a 342.
I will keep looking.

It's based on a 342 but this particular picture is of a prototype model in its own right, which never made production.
It's actually from slightly earlier, to give you a clue!

That's what I was looking for and that's what it is according to the caption.
However, I've since learned that the caption is misleading and this is a 342 from 1950/51 as you said!

Because of its date of creation it is definitely a BMW and not a EMW nor a BMW/EMW.  ;)

Yes, our beloved Internet.................

I think I found about 8 sites dealing with this car and it was sort of a tossup
regarding BMW versus EMW and all but one identified the car as a 342.

What was a little bit off-putting was that the majority of the sites were true "enthusiast" sites or forums, not the odd "PhotoBucket" pic that someone just threw out there.

Neither Michael Frostick's nor Werner Oswald's excellent BMW histories had any photos of this series so I had to use the Internet.

In any case, I also found some great BMW military vehicle photos for my other passion that I had not seen before so it was all in all a successful few hours.
