Back from the dead, it's another puzzle about cars, and songs about cars, or songs that mention cars or driving, and the artists who recorded those songs. This installment again spans the scale from "this is ridiculously easy" to "what, are you kidding me?!
The rules are thus: No points for naming one of these vehicles - they are all quite easy. The points will be awarded for identifying the artist (1 point each), the song (1 point each), and the correct pairing (1 point each) as represented by a corresponding picture of a car, or an automotive event. While many of these artist have gone onto more mundane walks of life, or that recording studio in the sky, and their records may be long-since out-of-print, there are no insider-only "you have to have the book" requirements. Patience and good detective work is all that is required to find the solution to all of these. The answers are all available to the general public.
Here they are - enjoy!

How about this: C&tr8 The radiators, song is Straight Eight which would be car A, a Cadillac
-
How about this: C&tr8 The radiators, song is Straight Eight which would be car A, a Cadillac
That's not a Cadillac, and the song "Straight Eight" is not in this puzzle

C&tr10 is Irish crooner Val Doonican, stalwart of weekend television in the UK when I was younger. As well as his usual repertoire of smooth ballads, he sang several Irish comic songs, one of which was "O'Rafferty's Motor Car", which its owner had "made up of bits and pieces that he picked up here and there".
Inspired (if that's the word) by this ditty, someone called Myscha Aiken has produced the artwork shown at c&trK, which is called "Dinny O'Rafferty's Motor Car", and which includes elements from the song, not least the colour (40 shades of green), and the fact that two of the wheels were triangular, and the other two were from a pram and a tram.
My favourite bit of the picture is the radiator, but that's not specifically mentioned in the song. ;D
-
And I think there's another Irish connection with The Dubliners (c&tr7), the song "Johnston's Motor Car", and the picture c&trI.
The song is based on a real event from 1920, when four members of the Irish Republican Army, needing to transport a concession of rifles to a meeting some way away, contrived to call out the local doctor, Henry Maturin Johnston, to see a patient. He was the only person in the area who had a car, and they ambushed him and commandeered it for their mission.
This would probably have been forgotten, had it not been made into a rebel song, "Dr Johnston's Motor Car", by Irish poet William Gillespie. The song was apparently quite popular in the 1920s.
It has had several recordings, the Dubliners' one first appearing (I think) on their 1973 album "Plain and Simple".
The picture at c&trI is Dr Johnston with the car which was taken by the IRA. Oddly, it's a two-seater, which would hardly seem ideal for moving four people and a load of guns, but I suppose they just had to use what was available...

c&tr4 are MC5 and L Barracuda, the song Thunder Express?
c&tr1 Beach Boys and M Corvette, the song In my car?
c&tr8 The Radiators and H Mustang, the song Jigsaw?
-
c&tr4 are MC5 and L Barracuda, the song Thunder Express?
c&tr1 Beach Boys and M Corvette, the song In my car?
c&tr8 The Radiators and H Mustang, the song Jigsaw?
4 is the MC5. Thunder Express is somewhere in this puzzle, but the Barracuda (L) goes with another song
The song In My Car is not in this puzzle
The song Jigsaw is not in this puzzle
-
c&tr8 The Radiators has a song Low Rider which can be paired with CarD
-
so c&tr4 is MC5 and the song Thunder Express is probably about the Chevy Corvette which is Car M. It is indeed
The car pictured is 1967 Corvette LS7 454 Guldstrand/Super Chevy Project Car :)

This is the result of searching in the oddest places (like New Zealand) for Rock'n'roll, I've found this group a long ago. I have plenty pictures (HDD, books, magazines, vynil record albums and even memorabilia) of Rock'n'roll groups, for other purposes.

c&tr3 Jefferson Airplane and H Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Hertz, the song 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds

I think we all should give Otto the highest respect because He spent a lot of time trying to put together always challenging puzzles like this.
I can't find a single match and it will take a lot of time to browse artists I'm not familiar with trying to recognize faces and then look into theyr production to see if there's a car like the one in the puzzle.
I must confess I'm astonished to see that our friend Oguerrerob from Venezuela has got a collection of Rock'n'Roll groups from New Zealand where He just found the answer of the thoughest match!
I have to confess also that I tried to use GIS on that picture and the 1st result is a page about them and you can access there from a bigger menu about "New Zealand Music of the 60's, 70's and a bit of 80's Artists L - Z"
Now, I'm no-one to say who's is cheating and I have no elements at all to say what is true or not.
I have to say that it's hard to believe what you wrote, Oguerrerob.
I'm sure you'll understand my concern (expecially if you'll knew how hard is to think-find-collect-post and maintain a group puzzle like this) and you will also be able to provide some more elements to support your incredible knowledge about New Zealand music!
This, of course is just MY opinion and we have to see what Otto is thinking about.
-
c&tr3 Jefferson Airplane and H Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Hertz, the song 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds
:o Grace Slick sure changed a lot since I last saw her!
-
If Orugerrerob has such a nice collection of vinyl records of NZ groups, let him offer us proof of his collection - photo the vinyls themselves and show them to us. Then all suspicions will be erased. Otherwise I'm with Otto on this one.
-
Well guys, I respect and try to be respected. If my explanation is not good enough so to be considered full of crap.
Not Respected - Not welcome - See you
-
Oguerrerob ,
Not Respected - Not welcome - See you
I do not think anybody wants you to leave !!!
I myself have an old vinyl collection, few Stones posters, Doors, Michael Jackson, and a T-shirt of Hendrix from in the 60's which is in a frame with glass.
I must confess that I too searched my vinyl record collection ( 216 ),guess somewhat similiar to searching google images in a way>>and I am sure that my collection pales in comparison to yours.
I do not know Otto's reasons, but I highly value his opinions and well developed posts/puzzles, as yours and pnegyesi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hang around buddy.
With true respect to all,
John

Of course that's NOT a sufficient explanation! If you would follow Pal's suggestion you would have the chance to confirm, but what you replied says it all!
I'm afraid you beat me to say good bye!
-

You were respected and you were respectfully questioned. Your "take my ball and go home" attitude is one of disrespect for the spirit of the site and what is going on here. I am slapping a ban on you for violating the spirit of the site until such time as you contact me via email and explain to me as to why I am wrong for doing so. Then, only if Otto and I agree, you will be re-instated.
-
going back to the puzzle. I am very much intrigued by band No8 the New Orleans Radiators aka The Radiators. There are plenty of setlists available online and I found a song, titled Chevy '39 which would tie with car D.

-

Nothing about towing, but related to doing something above the Earth's surface.
-
regarding cars B, C and H - are these songs about the actual cars?
-
B and C are specific as to the car mentioned. H is a bit more general, though the car pictured is specific to the use of a car, as mentioned in the song it is linked to.
To clarify, some of the songs do not have cars as their central theme, or their titles. In some cases, the use of a car is part of the song, though no brand or model is mentioned, as with car pictured in H, and with the previously identified "Hitchin' a Ride"
A thumb goes up, a car goes by
Oh, won't somebody stop and help a guy?
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Been away too long from my baby's side
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride

Are #1 and #6 famous bands?

as they are nearly impossible to identify at all! :D

Yes, it could

Could Car B be related to one of the performers at the Lawrence Welk show?

Sorry, I missed this earlier.
#1 enjoyed more enduring fame than #6; #1 has already been identified as the Beach Boys. :)
-
Artist #3 COULD be Sandy Denny of Fairport convention...she's the only female vocalist (guest vocalist, for that matter) to appear on a Led Zeppelin album ("Ballad of Evermore"....one of my favorite LZ songs.)
The photo sure looks like it could be Ann Wilson of Heart, tho...but I'll go with Sandy Denny just for the hell of it.
RtR
-
Neither Sandy Denny nor Fairport Convention appear in this puzzle.
-
Could Car B be related to one of the performers at the Lawrence Welk show?
-
Sorry for the delay on answering, I wanted to make sure I didn't give you a bum answer. As far as I can determine, no.
-
Time for some very generous clues.
The record by the Artist #1 (The Beach Boys, sleuthed earlier) tells of one Beach Boy doing a typical Beach Boys thing (which made it part of this puzzle), as well as some very non-typical things for a Beach Boy, in a place far from where you would expect. Further, the place mentioned in the song is not in the place where the song says it is. But don't blame the Boys for that.
The record by Artist # 3 is tied to a car of the general type of one of the cars pictured (no make or model is mentioned in the song) , and described in the song as being in a state like that of the pictured car. Though one might think it so, the girl in the picture did not provide the band with their name. And so, you can correctly conclude their name includes that of a woman or girl.
The studio version of record by Artist # 6 mentions a specific model of car; live versions I've found do not. The reason for that will be plain once you find the studio version, which samples another, earlier recording by somebody else. The band derived their name from that car, too, it would seem.
The record by artist #9 mentions an automotive activity that is particularly well-suited to one of the pictured cars. This band was named for a fictional character who was not from the same place as them. And the core of this group were, like their mentor, not from the same place they achieved their modest success as a band. Unlike a lot of the songs in this puzzle, their recording is mellow and melancholy.
The recording by Artist #12 is interrupted by a guy named Tony with a slide-whistle, and goes on to tell the (spoken) tale of Jim, and his recently purchased car and its most important feature. As was sleuthed earlier, this recording was a promotional number for specific car.

Didn't the Beach Boys record a lot of songs? I trawled through the lyrics of around 350 of them before giving up, only to find that I had a possible answer quite early on, just based on the geographical anomaly. But I was looking for mention of specific cars, and hadn't looked at the pictures carefully enough.
Anyway, I think the link is Artists #1, the Beach Boys, and Song/Car E, the song "Cotton Fields" and the 1956 Mercury, which has a flat tyre.
The relevant lyrics are:
Let me tell you now well got me in a fix
I caught a nail in my tire doing lickety-splits.
The geographical anomaly comes from:
It was back in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
- because if you are in Louisiana, you would have to be at least 30 miles away from Texarkana, which straddles the Texas/Arkansas border.
But we don't blame the Beach Boys for that, because they didn't write the song - it was written by Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) in 1940.
-
I knew, as I typed those clues, that one super sleuth would leverage more points as a result.

just curious, is car J related to something like "tow car"? Based on the number of the aircraft I found a picture describing the car as a "tow car"
Nothing about towing, but related to doing something above the Earth's surface.
Do you mean flying?
(And Tom_I - I gave up after about 60 songs, so congrats again!)
-
Do you mean flying?
Well, yes and no. The lyrics are a seem to direct the listener to do something with a car, above the earth, that can't really be done. Some of the other words (some spoken, some sung) are seemingly nonsense, as well.
-
six more pairings and lots of points remain up for grabs

I'll repeat these clues, and send this to the Black Hole
-
I think artist12 and carB are a pair. So I have to ask, was this song part of the records offered for the new car radios which Chrysler introduced in october, 1955?
-
Yes, artist12 and carB are connected.
I don't know of a connection to Chrysler's record players, but I suppose this record would be at home there.
-
was the name of band no9 something like ET?
-
The name of band #9 can be remotely and indirectly connected with the movie "ET - the Extra Terrestrial", but the name of the band is not ET, or any two-letter name.
-
was it a TV character, like Alf?
-
The fictional character was the center of at least a few TV series; not from outer space.
-
was this character also featured in books?
-
The character got started in print media, but it wasn't books. The stories of this character have since been compiled into books.
-
Superman?
-
Not Superman - he's from outer space. ;)
-
Batman?
-
Batman?
Not Batman
-
hmm, Sherlock Holmes?
-
This character is smart, but not THAT smart.
-
are we talking about a character from a cartoon?
-
I believe cartoon films of this character have been made.
-
American character?
-
No

Right group (at last!) wrong song.

I took a holiday mentions that he drove miles and miles. And it is a slow and melancholic song
-
I took a holiday mentions that he drove miles and miles. And it is a slow and melancholic song
Specifically, it says "I hired a motorcar" (Shelby struck a deal with the Hertz Corporation to produce a special line of G.T. 350's for rent that, after their rental-car lives were finished, were returned to Ford, refurbished, and sold to the public as "GT 350-H" models); "it took me miles and miles away".
A sad but pretty slice of schmaltzy pop.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQPf2nWFMgY
I almost used their song "She Said Ride", which is more up-tempo, but I don't think it has anything to do with cars. :D
Some fine sleuthing by you, pnegyesi

Not broken down, exactly.

None that I'm aware of

Song F: simply abandoned old car?
Singer 12: was he born in the 1930s?
-
F - not abandoned. The car served a purpose in the song.
12: I don't know for sure, but I think he's a bit older. He was part of Jimmy Dorsey's band before striking out on his own in the early 1950's

Song F: crashed old car?

Regarding the song about car H. Is it about a Ford Mustang or the pictured special Mustang?
And the song about the car accident. Does the lyrics mention what happened to the car?
-
H was "I Took a Holiday" (in that the GT 350-H was the rental car version). I assumed you were referring to H, and updated the solutions list yesterday, accordingly.
So, "J" needs to be matched to another artist and song.
F: The lyrics suggest either that the singer was injured in an accident, or the words could be a euphemism for getting either high or inebriated. In either case, the car pictured is appropriate to the title and the lyrics.
-
Sorry, long day. Band 13 and song J are a pair. Was band 13 American?

No need to be sorry - I concluded you meant car "H" when you found "I Took a Holiday".
Band 13 is from the US.

Clue review
The record by Artist # 3 is tied to a car of the general type of one of the cars pictured (no make or model is mentioned in the song) , and described in the song as being in a state like that of the pictured car. Though one might think it so, the girl in the picture did not provide the band with their name. And so, you can correctly conclude their name includes that of a woman or girl.
The recording by Artist #12 (he was part of Jimmy Dorsey's band before striking out on his own in the early 1950's) is interrupted by a guy named Tony with a slide-whistle, and goes on to tell the (spoken) tale of Jim, and his recently purchased car (and its most important feature). As was sleuthed earlier, this recording was a promotional number for specific car.

was artist no12 featured in Plymouth News Caravan?
-
Not as far as I know. This seems to have been from a musical revue, versus a news show.
-
Is he (12) Mario Lanza and is the song from the Shower of Stars?
-
Is he (12) Mario Lanza and is the song from the Shower of Stars?
No
-
wasn't the song featured in Shower of Stars?
-
wasn't the song featured in Shower of Stars?
No, but "Star" is part of the show name.
-
was this show aired on TV?
-
was this show aired on TV?
No
-
was this show shown in theatres?
-
No - it was a radio show.
-
To recap:
Artist #12 was singing about a (Car B) Plymouth. He did so on the radio. The radio show on which he did so included the word Star in it's title. One need only take the Time to put those together with one more word, which I've already provided.
-
D'oh! I've been on that web page several times, but always managed to miss the right clip (to be honest I got a bit bored listening to that horrible advertising jingle).
Anyway, it looks like Artist #12 is Vince Carson on the "Plymouth Star Time" radio show in 1956, with Song B "You Gotta Go, Go, Go With Your Beautiful Plymouth".
Oddly enough, Tony, the guy who interrupts with the Swanee whistle is talking to someone called Jim, not Vince, but I didn't try to research that any further. ;D
He's talking about the 200 hp Hy-Fire V8 engine, and the main selling point for 1956, the push-button transmission selector.
-
Eureka!
I've attached the clip for those who might want to hear the catchy tune. Vince introduces himself at the beginning ;)
-
I have some new group puzzles queued up, but I really think we need to close these older ones out.
I'm offering twice the regular points for solutions that are posted in this thread before 12:00 AM Monday, Eastern Standard Time.
-
One of the remaining pairs is related to the first puzzle I posted that connected a picture of car to a song.
-
Here comes Tom_I - he's found the puzzle in my last clue ;D
-
Yep, that's given me that Artists #13 are Was (Not Was).
Not so sure about the song, though. Just going through some lyrics at the moment.
Could it be Song F, "Are You Okay"?
That has the lines:
Once she had a car, you know, her uncle gave her
But that got totalled, that's Judy.
EDIT!
Cancel that. It's Song J, "Man Vs. The Empire Brain Building", which has the lines:
Pontiac, Pontiac
Drive your car across the sky.

Hot diggity dog, the clue worked! ;D
That's about the only song on the Born to Laugh at Tornadoes LP that is not on YouTube. I'll have to remedy that.
-
So we are left with one unidentified pair with a band named after a lady and a song where the singer talks about getting high or about a totalled car

More or less. The band's name includes a woman's name, but also includes a collective name for her associates.
-
Before I dwell into the likes of Blackeyed Susans, are we talking about an American band?
-

Yes
-
does the song say "totalled" car?
-
No
-
wrecked car?
-
No
-
abandoned car?
-
The term used to describe the state of the car is a two-word term, that is probably used more in the US than other places.
-
run down car?
-
No - that car is more than run-down. ;)
-
smashed up car?
-
That's not it

Band: Margot and the Nuclear So & So's

In that junked out German motor car

Yay - it's finally done!
I'll tally the points shortly.

If Orugerrerob has such a nice collection of vinyl records of NZ groups, let him offer us proof of his collection - photo the vinyls themselves and show them to us. Then all suspicions will be erased. Otherwise I'm with Otto on this one.
Now would be an especially good time to see that collection.
