Bingo! Well done.

Unaltered photo below. This was apparently operated on a trial basis by Dundee Corporation in 1932. Later the same year they bought five Thornycrofts, with rather less distinctive bodies by Metro-Cammell.

Ah!  Dundee Corporation buses.

Upstairs the sign said "NO SMOKING, NO SPITTING" and downstairs: "NO SPITTING".  i think it was something to do with the chemicals used in the jute mills inducing expectoration.

Oh, I don't know.  When I was a lad the East Yorkshire buses I used to go to school on had "No Spitting" signs and we don't have any jute mills around here!

Likewise London Transport buses (and tube trains) in the 1940s had "No Spitting" signs.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong
