It looks quite new but as many american (custom) cars are based on cars from 40-50's, I guess this is a recent kit car built on a 40-50's Ford chassis. Am I looking in the right direction ?

Carnut,
a-ok
Last year of the 90's ford thunderbird.
Kit which can be purchased and installed, most call it the shoebox ford, 1949-51.

And I'm delighted to offer you your first point!
A '49 Ford is what this was based on, using 90's T-bird body-parts!
Well done.

It's perhaps worth adding that the marque producing these kits to convert a modern 1990s Ford Thunderbird and/or Mercury Cougar into a '49 Ford look-alike is Easy Rods of New Jersey.  The car is based on 1990s Ford mechanicals, and not the other way round  ;)

Live and almost direct cfrom the salt flats, I'll suggest that the caption be changed to reflect a 49 Ford body (sorta) on late-model T-bird mechanical bits.

Off into the wild, hot, windy desert,

Thanks guys!
I didn't think it looked at all like a 1949 car but if that's what it is I'll change it.

Let's be clear - it's a tenth generation (1989–1997) Ford Thunderbird, fitted with ill-conceived and unimaginatively-fashioned body panels that were meant to look like a shoe-box Ford. The 6-Series BMW-inspired greenhouse of the T-bird just doesn't jibe with the fake Shoebox lower.

RTR, you're a lucky man in my book!

Thank you, good sir!

The weather is beautiful this morning.  Low 70sF, slight breeze, a few wispy clouds and lots of blue sky!

Competitors are arriving for pit setup and tech and the salt is the best I've ever seen it.  It's like driving on brand-new concrete (not the wet stuff, tho.  :D )

I'll post some photos from time to time.  Last thing:  I agree with Otto.  Ill-conceived and unimaginatively- fashioned.  I wouldn't drive one, much less pay money for it.

And what's more, I can't think what kind of idiot would post the ghastly thing as a puzzle.
Oh, hang on - it was one of mine!

Carnut,
Well thank you sir !!!
I wished that I had real time to address and possibly solve puzzles.

After researching the Harris Speedster for 25 years, the lost Daytona coupe, the infamous Tucker Conv, lost ferrari's and a host of many others, I did pick up on quite a bit of trivia and automobile knowledge.
Perhaps in the future I can chime in more often.

Again, thanks carnut, I finally have a point !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
