What's this, by whom - for 1 point?

Google Image Search continues to raise its ugly head on AutoPuzzles.
For the sake of our newer members who may not be aware of past discussions on it, Google Image Search as a means of solving puzzles is banned on this website.

AutoPuzzles is primarily a game of automotive knowledge, not of who can copy and paste the quickest.

We ask all members to remember and respect this, and retain the right to ask puzzle-solvers how they came to their answer.

Have fun!

Fioravanti (roof)?

My source doesn't mention his name in connection with this car.
Looking at it I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved, but he certainly doesn't seem to be credited with it.

I see what you mean.
No, I don't think it does.
I think it's just removeable, but I'll check my facts when I get home tonight.

Edit:  No Fioravanti involvement at all that I can find.

Ohh, this one is driving me crazy as I know it, but my brain won't work (except I can remember this car was orange!).  Is the car on which it is based Japanese?

To be honest there was no mention of what the car was based on, so I don't actually know its mechanicals.
Being Italian (as we've already established) I assumed it was probably Fiat, but that does not preclude it from being Japanese.
It may well have no innards at all of course!
You've seen a colour picture of this?  I haven't!

I've seen more than a colour picture of the car; I've seen the actual car somewhere, plus have some literature about it!  Problem is I'm currently 10 light years from home where said information resides!!

Is any of the famous design studios (Bertone, Zagato, Pinifarina etc.) involved?

No.  Much less well-known.

Right you are - so it is!
Now, for that point - who built it?
It wasn't built by Toyota.

It was designed by Toyota’s Brussels design office, but it seems that Cecomp (Italian design manufacturing company) built it. Probably Giovanni Forneris is the name that you are looking for, I am not sure.

That's it!
CECOMP is what I was looking for.  They regularly build prototypes for others and this is one they built in steel and aluminium, obviously for Toyota.

And it does in fact have a roof that's fully retractable at the touch of a button!

Surprisingly this car did poorly when shown to Toyota MR fans and was dropped in favour of a much more conservative design for the next MR2.

So now your memory has been jogged Djetset and you were right about the colour.
