Solved - MJW #904 - Verga Chiasso 1956
« on: April 22, 2012, 03:15:10 AM »
I know this has appeared in a group puzzle before but not as a separate one.
So for a point identify the make, model, base car and the year.

It is VW-based and judging by it's relative size it may well be based on a Karmann-Ghia (I don't have that detail)

Not Enzmann and I believe this may be a 'one-off'

At first I thought this was a Vergo, a one-off based on a Beetle-chassis by the Swiss brothers Vergo in 1956. But the info I have is that only build a coupé version with gullwingdoors (see photos). Could this be the same Vergo converted into a roadster? Or did they make more than one? I'm curious to be honest ...

It is in fact from the Vergo brothers, claimed to be built in 1956.  They made two of them, one the gullwing, the other the mystery car.

On MJW #904, the windshield and front doors lift up and to the rear to allow entry to the car.

Previously identified here as a Vergo Chiasso 1956, based on a VW Beetle.

Further information on the gullwing model, from a Google translation:

The history of this car is just as extraordinary as his looks! This car was used in fact to the smuggling of auto spare parts and especially bearings of trucks, at a time when tariffs were higher than at present. She was seized in 1959!

The cache has laid off about this is very surprising since the four corners of the vehicle are four cylinders that lift the frame to a height of about 40 cm revealing contraband. The whole thing works on 6 volt circuit. and unfortunately the connection of a 12V battery has burned a portion of the lifting system which is now obsolete.

Vergo Chiasso 1956 based on a VW chassis is correct.
So one point to Delorean for identifying the make, year and base and supplying photos of the coupe version.
I'm also giving a point to sixtee5cuda for identifying the model and for supplying the extra information.
I hope this is satisfactory for you both........

I'm sure that it's called Verga. That VW specials page got it wrong. Google "Carrozzeria Verga" and you'll find a result to confirm. ;)

Thanks Allemano,
I had it as Verga before and wanted to confirm that was correct.

This is why accuracy is very important otherwise these mistakes will be repeated again and again in the future.
Never believe websites, books and what owners tell you without checking first!

Actually, that's the same car...in your 2nd pic someone 'photoshopped' away the logo from the front and from the wheel covers. I have the unmodified pic with the same plate too.

The mislabeled "Vergo" descriptive text a couple of images back, discusses the use of the gullwing car as a smuggling device.

Smuggling spare auto parts for Italian cars from France to Spain?  Is my piss-poor interpretation accurate?

I typed it into Google Translate once, read it, and threw it away.  Sorry.  Your translation isn't too far off.
