Solved - MJW #866 - Benson DKW Special 1965

It's been over a month since I last posted any puzzles so let's put that to rights now....

Let's start with a red car, albeit one that looks if it needs a bit of TLC.
A point is on offer if you can identify who built it, what engine it used and the year it was completed.

As far as I know it was not based on a Crosley and it doesn't have a Crosley engine either.

Wheelbase 80 inches
Width 50 inches

Engine: 750 cc, 3 cylinder 2 cycle
Transmission: Zenith 4 speed
Brakes: Inboard drums rear, drums front

I refer to it as the Benson DKW Special.
