What's this and who built it, for 1 point?

It“s a Ford Model A Special built by Galen Klein and Tom Whittemore from Palo Alto, California. 1940s.

Indeed so.  Apparently built whilst they were at Palo Alto High School.
I wonder if it was inspired by the pre-war Auto Union rear-engined racing cars?
