It does look incredibly like that car that can be seen on a couple of websites labelled as a Frua Fiat 1100 Barchetta 1946.
It even has that fin down the middle of the rear but which can't actually be seen clearly in the puzzle photo as the middle of the picture is missing..
Is it in fact that same car but which is being incorrectly labelled by those websites and it's actually by another coachbuilder?

Maybe it was designed by Pietro Frua whilst he was at Stabilimenti Farina but was built by Farina - not that they are in any way obscure, but am I on the right track?

When I found that car, I immediately compared it with the barchetta by Frua.
My source (an article about this coachbuilder in a magazine) reports a different Coachbuilder and designer, but now that I found a couple of period pics of the Frua-bodied one, they indeed look the same.

The article (not only the caption) reports that "he worked on Lancia and Fiat chassis, realizing bodies that, in the Concorso d'Eleganza in XXXXXX and XXXX, won the 2nd prize. In these occasions he showed two prototipes, always designed by XXXXx, one based on a Lancia Aprilia chassis and another on a Fiat 1100 one. One picture shows an elegant 1100 S Spider" and the caption reads "The 1100 designed by XXXXX, 2nd at the Concorso d'Eleganza in XXXXX."

I do not trust that magazine 100 %, but the Coachbuilder is pretty obscure and all the pictures there (and info) came from its archive...

Those first 2 prize-winning designs then: were they designed by Michelotti?

Coggiola?
Is Accossato obscure enough to be the coachbuilder?!

Not Coggiola and not Accossato.
This obscure coachbuilder was featured here with another Fiat*.

Revelli di Beaumont?
There are a lot more obscure coachbuilders than there were ever well-known ones....

Yes! Revelli is the designer, at least according to my source.
In the meantime I found a similar design by Frua:

Not Garavini, sorry.
The reason of the * in my previous reply is that we have a Fiat bodied by a Mr XXXX in the solved section, but in als15 list here:
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/news-information-and-feedback/the-encyclopaedia-of-italian-coachbuilders/
you'll find the name of his firm, not his own.

Is that Mr Maestri?
There must be about 1000 names of Carrozzerie in Alessandro's list, the vast majority of them obscure, so It isn't really a great help.
But let's try one: Carrozzeria Figini?

Not Maestri.
I'd like to help more, but can't see how.
I think if you narrow down the list it would be easier (I don't mind professional or unprofessional methods  ;) )
My clue about the Coachbuilder's company name and the man's name can be helpful if read in the right way.
