No 8 looks like a Rolls-Royce engine. It's a sidevalve (flathead) unit, so it must be the 40/50 hp Silver Ghost engine, straight six, with cylinders cast in two blocks of three.
I'd have thought so too, but no response yet.

Sorry I overlooked this.

No 11 is a Continental straight eight flathead, fitted in a 1929 Ruxton Roadster.

This had me confused for a while, as the plugs seem to be on the wrong side of the cylinder head, but as it turns out to be in a front wheel drive car, I guess the engine is mounted the opposite way round to what you would expect.

I thought #1 would be relatively easy, but it doesn't seem to be. It looks to be a fairly small four cylinder sidevalve unit. The most distinctive thing about it is that the distributor sprouts out of the top of the head, which rules out a lot of possibilities. Some Morris engines were designed like that, but I'm sure this is not one of them. In fact, the electrical bits don't look British at all.

So first question, is it British?

Western Europe? Let's say west of a line formed by the eastern borders of Germany, Austria and Italy?

Yes and no

 ???

Now I'm really confused.

Does it make a difference if we shift Austria to the other side, and say west of a line formed by the eastern borders of Germany, Switzerland and Italy?

Could all this prevarication mean that when it was founded, the company that made this engine was situated somewhere within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or am I getting this completely wrong?

Prevarication? Not at all. If all nations were perfectly shaped squares, aligned on a grid, then I could say, yes or no, if this nation is east of three named countries.

Yes, the county was once within the Austro-Hungarian Empire

OK, I think I begin to understand - I should have worded my question more carefully.  ;)

Is the company that made this engine from the former Czechoslovakia?

It's an in-line four cylinder sidevalve unit, so first guess would be Skoda.

I don't think Tatra would ever have used an engine like this - their small units were generally horizontally opposed - and Aeros were all two-strokes.

I'm afraid my knowledge of the Czech motor industry is all but exhausted, but could it be a Praga?

Or something more obscure?

No, not an Alfa.

Remember, just need the brand and engine configuration...

Sorry, I didn't give the configuration, as I'd already mentioned it a couple of times.

#1: In-line four-cylinder sidevalve engine by Praga.
