That's not the name I have, but what I have can be just a joke and not what the author had in mind.
Is there anything to support your guess?

You have 2 way to find it.
1. I took this pic from a quite known source.
2. The nickname I have is not an impossible one, once you know the right direction.

Not a Gremlin.
This name was used only once for a car (not a production car) and in a slighlty different form another time. Both cars are featured here at Autopuzzles.
You are in the right direction...

Was this car rescued, or is this the last picture of it we will ever see?

You won't find it on a trailer (  ;) ).
This pic was taken in the place where this ...thing... lies, a junkyard!

Strange question...unless you are now following way #1...in that case it seems you got the source .
No relation with Jeep or Panda.

I found it on one of the sources you hinted at but I'll leave it to our friends across the Atlantic to continue guessing.
If it looks like reaching a dead end then I'll reply with the answer....... ;)

Okay thanks Otto.

Apparently the car has been lying in the Hidden Valley Auto Parts junkyard in Maricopa AZ for the last 15 to 20 years.
The junkyard owners have nicknamed the car "Armadillo" as that was what was on the license plate when they acquired it.
The car uses a 1968 Chevrolet frame, engine, suspension, drivetrain and dashboard. The bodywork is made up of dozens of aluminium panels riveted together to create someone's vision of a sports coupe.

The above information comes from a well-known source dated February 2005.

That'd be Armadillo, Texas, I suppose.

I'll bet it was named after the animal. Here's a rear view:
