I need somebody to proffer a complete answer, and this one will be solved.

I think the year is 1901

You're right. One 's'. The article is old and small, and my eyes are failing me.

This was indeed from 1901. The article I found it in calls it a "Burlesque Auto-Locomotive". I don't think the builder called it that, but I will likely be proven wrong about that, too.

I'll post the article tomorrow.
