Looks like a J.Walter Christie design.
I have pictures of very similar 1905  Christie´s designs. One I´ve saved as "60 HP", the other as the "Blue Flyer".

Is this the right direction?

I found the [puzzle pic in an old magazine, captioned:

Walter Christie in his Front-Drive, Front-Steer Racer. The picture was taken at Yonkers, New York, on September 24, 1904
